I think musical taste is shaped by a combination of personality, upbringing, and life experiences. For example, someone who grew up listening to jazz at home may appreciate it more than someone who was exposed mainly to pop music. Cultural background can also play a significant role because different societies value different musical traditions. On top of that, music serves different purposes for different people. Some listen to relax, while others want something energetic that motivates them.
How have young people’s music preferences changed over the past few decades?
Young people’s music preferences have become much more diverse than they used to be. In the past, people were often limited to whatever was played on the radio or available in local stores. Nowadays, streaming platforms give young listeners access to music from virtually every country and genre. As a result, it’s common to find someone who enjoys K-pop, classical music, and hip-hop at the same time. Social media has accelerated this trend by helping songs spread globally within a matter of hours. Overall, music tastes seem less restricted by geography than they were in previous generations.
Why do so many young people spend a lot of money on concerts?
Many young people see concerts as experiences rather than simple forms of entertainment. Listening to music at home is convenient, but attending a live performance creates a completely different atmosphere. There’s something exciting about being surrounded by thousands of people who share the same enthusiasm for an artist. In addition, concerts often become memorable events that people talk about for years afterward. Social media may also contribute to their popularity because people enjoy sharing photos and videos from these experiences. For many young adults, the memories feel worth the cost.
Do you think music concerts are suitable for older people to attend?
Absolutely. I don’t think enjoyment of music has an age limit. Many older people are passionate about music and may even have a deeper appreciation for live performances because of their life experience. Of course, some concerts can be physically demanding due to loud volumes or long periods of standing. However, many venues now provide seating areas and better facilities to accommodate different age groups. As long as the event matches their interests and comfort level, I see no reason why older adults shouldn’t attend concerts.
How has technology changed the way people listen to music?
Technology has completely transformed music consumption. People no longer need to buy physical albums or even download songs individually because streaming services provide instant access to enormous music libraries. This convenience has made music more accessible than ever before. At the same time, recommendation algorithms help listeners discover artists they might never have found on their own. However, I sometimes feel that the abundance of choice can be overwhelming. People may skip from song to song without fully appreciating the music they’re listening to.
What role does music play in bringing people together?
Music is one of the easiest ways to create a sense of connection between people. Even individuals from different cultures or backgrounds can bond over a shared love of a particular artist or genre. You can see this at festivals, weddings, and sporting events where music helps establish a collective atmosphere. It often encourages people to interact more openly and feel part of a group. In some cases, music can even bridge language barriers. That’s why it remains such a powerful social tool around the world.
Do you think event organizers should pay close attention to the music they choose? Why?
Yes, definitely, because music has a huge impact on the overall mood of an event. The wrong choice can make people feel uncomfortable or disconnected, even if everything else is well organized. For instance, loud, energetic music might work perfectly at a sports event but feel completely inappropriate at a formal ceremony. Organizers need to consider the audience, the purpose of the event, and the atmosphere they want to create. A carefully selected playlist can enhance people’s enjoyment without them even noticing it consciously. In contrast, poor music choices tend to stand out immediately.
Can music from other countries influence local culture? How?
Yes, I think international music can have a significant influence on local culture. When a foreign genre becomes popular, it often affects fashion, language, and even lifestyle trends. For example, the global popularity of K-pop has introduced many people to Korean culture beyond just the music itself. Young people may start learning the language, following cultural customs, or consuming other forms of entertainment from that country. At the same time, local artists often blend international influences with their own traditions, creating something unique. As a result, cultural exchange through music can be both creative and beneficial.
