IELTS Writing Task 2 | Do the Advantages of an Ageing Population Outweigh the Disadvantages?

In many countries, people are now living longer than ever before. Some people say an ageing population creates problems for governments. Other people think there are benefits if society has more elderly people. To what extent do the advantages of having an ageing population outweigh the disadvantages?

Model Answer:

In many countries, increasing life expectancy has led to a growing proportion of elderly people within the population. While some argue that this demographic trend benefits society through the valuable contributions older generations make to families and communities, others contend that it creates significant challenges for governments. Although an ageing population can provide important social capital, I believe its disadvantages outweigh its advantages because of the substantial economic pressures it places on public finances and essential services.

Admittedly, a larger elderly population can provide a community with invaluable social capital. Many senior citizens provide crucial support to their families by offering unpaid childcare, allowing younger parents to remain active in the workforce without the burden of high daycare costs. Furthermore, retirees often pass down decades of professional and life experience by serving as community mentors. Therefore, from a wider social perspective, older generations can function as a stabilising anchor for both families and local communities.

However, despite these undeniable elements of social capital, the profound economic strain of a greying population poses structural challenges that far outweigh any social benefits. As a demographic shifts toward retirement, the active labour force shrinks, drastically reducing income tax revenues while simultaneously placing immense pressure on state pension funds. Concurrently, an older demographic requires extensive and costly healthcare, which drains public resources and forces governments to divert money away from critical sectors like education. Ultimately, the massive financial burden of supporting an ageing society creates vulnerabilities that completely eclipse its social advantages.

In conclusion, an ageing population undoubtedly offers social benefits through family support and the transfer of experience and knowledge. However, these contributions are ultimately overshadowed by the severe economic strain associated with rising healthcare costs, pension obligations, and a shrinking workforce. For this reason, I believe the disadvantages of population ageing far outweigh its advantages.
