One item that I ended up spending much more money on than I had originally planned was my laptop. I bought it about a year ago when I started taking my studies and personal projects more seriously. At first, I had a budget of around $800 because I only needed a computer for everyday tasks like writing assignments, attending online classes, and browsing the internet.

However, after doing some research, I realized that a cheaper model might not be powerful enough for what I wanted to do in the long run. I had recently become interested in video editing and programming, both of which require a decent amount of processing power. As a result, I started looking at higher-end laptops with better performance, more storage, and a longer battery life.

In the end, I spent roughly $1300, which was about $500 more than I had expected. On top of the laptop itself, I also bought a protective case, an external mouse, and a software subscription, which increased the overall cost even further.

I think I spent more than expected for two main reasons. First, I underestimated how expensive good-quality laptops had become. Second, once I started comparing different models, I was tempted by features that seemed genuinely useful rather than just luxurious. I convinced myself that spending more upfront would save me from needing to upgrade again in a few years.

Looking back, I don’t regret the purchase because I use the laptop almost every day, and it has helped me with both my academic work and personal interests. Even though it cost significantly more than I had planned, I think it was a worthwhile investment.

Oh, wow, okay, so this instantly brings to mind a total impulse buy from last winter. I ended up spending an absolute fortune on a classic, camel-colored tailored wool coat from a premium brand.

I think the final price tag was just over six hundred pounds. To put that into perspective, I’d originally set out with a strict budget of around one hundred and fifty max, so I completely blew my budget out of the water.

The reason I bought it was that I was trying to build a proper, grown-up wardrobe for work and interviews. I’d just started a new job that required me to dress a bit more smartly, and all my old winter jackets were either super casual puffers or cheap fast-fashion coats that looked battered after one season. I wanted something timeless, elegant, and warm that would make me look put-together, even if I was just wearing jeans underneath.

As for why I spent so much more than expected, it really came down to a mix of peer pressure and the sheer difference in quality. I went shopping with an older cousin of mine who is very much into the “buy less, buy better” philosophy. She dragged me out of the high-street shops and into this beautiful boutique. The second I tried this coat on, I was ruined. The fabric felt incredibly heavy and luxurious, the stitching was flawless, and it draped perfectly. My cousin convinced me that a cheap coat would just pill and look tatty in six months, whereas this one would last me a decade. I totally fell for the investment-piece logic, and while it hurt my savings account at the time, it’s basically become my go-to coat whenever the weather gets colder, so I don’t actually regret it.
