I’d like to talk about a university event that I attended last year, where I really didn’t enjoy the music that was played. It was an end-of-semester party organized by the student union at my university. The event was held in a large hall on campus, and it was meant to celebrate the end of exams and give students a chance to relax before the summer break.
I went there with a few of my close friends from my course. We had all been studying pretty intensely for several weeks, so we thought it would be a good opportunity to unwind and spend some time together. To be honest, none of us were particularly interested in the party itself, but since a lot of people from our department were going, we decided to join them.
The main reason I didn’t enjoy the event was the music. The organizers had hired a DJ, but the music he played just wasn’t my type at all. Most of the songs were extremely loud electronic dance tracks with heavy bass. I’m usually not that picky when it comes to music, but after a while every song seemed to sound the same. It was so loud that it was almost impossible to have a conversation without shouting, which was frustrating because catching up with my friends was the main reason I’d gone in the first place.
Another issue was that the DJ didn’t seem to read the crowd very well. At several points, people appeared to lose interest and left the dance floor, but he kept playing the same style of music. I think a better mix of genres would have created a much better atmosphere.
Even though I enjoyed spending time with my friends, the music definitely made the overall experience less enjoyable. In fact, we ended up leaving much earlier than we had planned because none of us were having a particularly good time. It’s probably the only event I’ve attended where the music actually made me want to go home.

Honestly, this happened fairly recently, maybe three or four months ago. At the time, I’d just finished a really stressful few weeks at work because my team was trying to meet a major project deadline. Everyone was pretty exhausted, so one of my coworkers, Sarah, suggested going to this new lounge that had just opened near our office. It was supposed to be a nice place to relax after work, and since a few people from our department were going as well, I thought it would be a good chance to unwind and chat with people outside of a work setting.
Unfortunately, things didn’t quite go as expected. The biggest problem was the music. When I heard the word “lounge,” I imagined something calm and relaxing in the background. Instead, they were playing this strange electronic music that felt really intense and repetitive. It had this constant ticking sound and a heavy beat that just never seemed to stop. To be honest, it reminded me a bit of the music you hear in films when something bad is about to happen.
Normally, I don’t pay much attention to background music, but this was hard to ignore. After the stressful few weeks I’d had, it was probably the last thing I needed. Rather than helping me relax, it actually made me feel more tense. I remember trying to focus on the conversation, but I kept getting distracted by the music because it felt so restless and unsettling.
I stayed for about an hour because I didn’t want to leave straight away, but eventually I told everyone I was tired and headed home. Looking back, the evening itself wasn’t terrible, and it was nice spending time with my coworkers, but the music completely ruined the atmosphere for me. It’s probably one of the few times I’ve left a place thinking that the background music had actually made my day worse rather than better.
