Bilibili: 雅思口语 Part 2 – Describe a time when the electricity suddenly went off_哔哩哔哩_bilibili
Speaker: Joseph
I’d like to talk about a time when the electricity suddenly went off in my apartment about six months ago. It happened early in the evening, just as I was settling in to study for my final exams. I live in a high-rise building in the city, so I really wasn’t expecting a power cut at all.
The blackout lasted for roughly three hours, which felt much longer at the time. Everything went dark instantly—the lights, the Wi-Fi, even the elevator stopped working. At first, I just sat there in shock because I had just settled into a revision session on my laptop, and the battery was already low.
After I realised the power wasn’t coming back anytime soon, I tried to make the best of the situation. I lit a couple of candles, used my phone’s torch, and decided to take a break from studying. I ended up listening to music offline, doing some light stretches, and talking to my neighbour in the hallway, since many people had come out of their apartments to check what was going on.
In terms of how I felt, I’d say my emotions changed over time. Initially, I was quite frustrated and anxious because I was worried about wasting valuable study time. However, as the blackout continued, I actually felt strangely calm. The silence and lack of distractions forced me to slow down, and it turned into an unexpected chance to relax and reflect. By the time the electricity finally came back, I felt refreshed rather than stressed, which really surprised me.
Overall, although the power cut was inconvenient, it turned out to be a memorable and oddly positive experience.

I’d like to talk about a time when the electricity suddenly went off at my family home last winter. It happened on a bitterly cold December afternoon while I was staying with my parents. I was actually in my bedroom working on my computer, trying to catch up on some projects, when everything just shut down. It completely took us by surprise.
The blackout lasted for roughly two hours. Since it was quite cold outside, the lack of heating made the house feel even more uncomfortable, and at first, I honestly felt a bit restless.
I tried to keep myself occupied by tidying my room, but it was hard to focus. Eventually, my family and I huddled together in the living room and began looking through old family photo albums. As we flipped through the pictures, we shared stories about the moments captured, laughed at some hilarious memories, and even felt a touch of nostalgia. It was a simple activity, but it brought us closer and made the time pass surprisingly quickly.
In terms of how I felt, I have to admit that initially, I was frustrated and anxious, especially because I was working on a project that relied on Wi-Fi. However, as we spent time reminiscing, I started to feel unexpectedly calm and even joyful. It reminded me of the importance of family and cherishing the little moments, which I often take for granted in the rush of daily life.
Overall, although the blackout was inconvenient, it turned into a surprisingly heartwarming experience that strengthened our bond as a family.
