There is an increasing trend around the world of married couples deciding not to have children. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for couples who decide to do this.

Model Answer:

An increasing number of married couples around the world are choosing not to have children. This decision can offer significant financial and lifestyle benefits, but it may also create difficulties related to family support and social expectations.

One major advantage of remaining child-free is greater financial freedom. Raising children involves substantial long-term expenses, such as childcare, education and healthcare. Couples without children can therefore retain more of their income and use it for saving, investing or other priorities. Another benefit is greater flexibility in their personal and professional lives. Without the daily responsibilities of raising children, couples may find it easier to focus on career development, travel, hobbies or further education. They may also be able to relocate more easily for work or other opportunities without having to consider the needs of children.

However, there are also potential disadvantages. One is that couples may have less family support as they grow older. Adult children can provide emotional and practical assistance to ageing parents, while couples without children may need to rely more on relatives, friends or professional care services. Another disadvantage is the social pressure that some child-free couples may experience. In societies where having children is considered an important part of married life, they may face questions or pressure from family members and friends. This can cause considerable stress, particularly when the decision is repeatedly questioned by people around them.

In conclusion, not having children can give couples greater financial freedom and flexibility, but it can also mean less family support in later life and greater exposure to social pressure.
