Well, a plan I changed recently was a study session with a girl I’d only recently started seeing.
We both had an exam coming up, so we thought it would be a good idea to meet at the university library on a Saturday afternoon and study together. I was actually looking forward to it because I thought we’d be able to help each other out, and, to be honest, I also saw it as a good excuse to spend some time with her.
So we met at the library, found a table, and got our laptops and notes out. But after about twenty minutes, it became pretty obvious that neither of us was getting much work done. We’d start talking, one of us would make a joke, and then we’d end up chatting for another ten minutes. At one point, I looked at my notes and realized I’d been staring at the same page for ages without taking anything in.
So I suggested that we change the plan. Instead of forcing ourselves to study, we decided to grab some coffee and go for a walk around the city. We ended up wandering around for a couple of hours, stopping at a little bookshop, getting some street food, and sitting in a park just talking.
We talked about our families, what we wanted to do after university, places we’d like to travel to, and even some of the stupid decisions we’d made as teenagers. It felt much more natural than sitting in a library trying to concentrate while constantly getting distracted.
I remember feeling pretty relieved, to be honest. We’d been sitting there pretending to study, but neither of us was getting anything done, so leaving the library actually felt like a better use of the afternoon. I knew we still had an exam to prepare for, but I figured we could always study properly another day.
Looking back, I’m really glad we changed the plan. We ended up having a great afternoon, and I think we got to know each other much better.

To be completely honest, I had to change quite a big plan just a couple of months ago. Originally, I was planning to move into a new apartment right in the city centre around July. I’d spent weeks browsing listings, and I was really excited about having that whole city lifestyle, with my favourite cafés, restaurants and nightlife just a short walk away. It would also have been much closer to my office.
Then, unexpectedly, things changed at work. Our management announced that we were moving to a permanent hybrid work model, so I’d only have to go into the office twice a week instead of every day. Once I found that out, I started looking at my options again.
I also sat down and worked out how much I’d actually be spending. Between the higher rent, utility bills and the general cost of living in the city centre, I realized I would be paying a lot more just to be close to work, even though I wouldn’t be commuting nearly as often.
So I scrapped the original plan and decided to rent a much more spacious, light-filled place in a quieter suburb on the outskirts of the city. It’s a little further away, but there’s a direct train line nearby, there’s a lot more green space, and the rent is significantly lower.
Looking back, I feel really relieved that I changed my mind. At first, I was a little worried that I’d miss out on the excitement of living in the city centre. But once I settled in, I realized I actually preferred having more space and a quieter environment. And, of course, saving a decent amount of money every month was a pretty nice bonus.
So, what initially felt like a compromise actually turned out to be a much better fit for my lifestyle.
