How have streaming platforms changed the way people watch TV shows and movies?
Streaming platforms have completely changed the way people consume entertainment. Instead of waiting for a specific time for a show to air, people can watch whatever they want whenever it suits them. I think that’s one of the biggest reasons they’ve become so popular. They’ve also introduced people to international shows that they probably wouldn’t have discovered otherwise. Personally, I’ve watched series from Korea, Spain, and Germany, and they’ve all been surprisingly good. Overall, streaming has made entertainment much more convenient and diverse.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of streaming services compared with traditional television?
The biggest advantage is definitely flexibility because viewers can choose what to watch and pause or continue whenever they like. Another benefit is the huge variety of content available, from documentaries to independent films that aren’t usually shown on regular TV. On the other hand, having so many choices can be overwhelming. Some people also spend hours binge-watching without realizing how much time has passed. Traditional television, despite being less flexible, can sometimes feel simpler because you just turn it on and watch whatever is being broadcast. So, I think both have their strengths, but streaming fits modern lifestyles much better.
Do TV shows and online programs have a strong influence on people’s opinions and behavior? Why or why not?
Yes, I believe they can have a significant influence, although it depends on the individual. People often admire celebrities or fictional characters and may adopt their fashion, language, or even their attitudes. News programs and documentaries can also shape public opinion by highlighting certain issues. At the same time, most adults are capable of thinking critically and forming their own views. The real concern is probably younger audiences, who are generally more impressionable. That’s why I think media should be created responsibly while viewers should also learn to evaluate information carefully.
Why do some TV shows or online series become popular all over the world?
I think the most successful shows usually tell stories that people from different cultures can relate to. Themes like friendship, family, love, and ambition are universal, so they appeal to a wide audience. Social media also plays a huge role because people constantly recommend shows and share memorable scenes online. Once a series starts trending, many people watch it simply to be part of the conversation. High production quality and strong acting obviously help as well. It’s often a combination of great storytelling and online buzz that turns a show into a global hit.
Do you think social media has changed the way people discover and discuss TV shows? How?
Absolutely. These days, I discover more shows through TikTok or Instagram than through advertisements. Short clips and fan edits can make a series look so interesting that people immediately add it to their watch list. Social media has also made discussing shows much easier because fans from all over the world can share theories and reactions in real time. The downside is that spoilers spread incredibly fast, which can ruin the experience for people who haven’t caught up yet. Even so, I think social media has made watching TV feel much more interactive than it used to be.
Should streaming platforms be more responsible for the content they recommend to viewers? Why?
Yes, I think they should take some responsibility because recommendation algorithms can influence what people watch every day. If a platform constantly promotes sensational or misleading content, it could shape people’s perceptions in unhealthy ways. That doesn’t mean companies should decide what people are allowed to watch, though. Instead, they should be more transparent about how recommendations work and make it easier for users to customize them. Giving people more control would be a fair balance between personal freedom and corporate responsibility. Ultimately, viewers should make their own choices, but platforms shouldn’t ignore the impact of their algorithms.
How does the type of content people watch differ between younger and older generations?
Generally speaking, younger people tend to prefer shorter and faster-paced content because they’re used to platforms like YouTube and TikTok. They also seem more interested in streaming services and online creators than traditional TV channels. Older generations, however, often enjoy news, documentaries, or long-running television programs that they’ve watched for years. Of course, there are plenty of exceptions, and I know older people who binge-watch Netflix just as much as teenagers do. I think the biggest difference isn’t age itself but the technology people grew up with. That has a huge impact on their viewing habits.
Do you think traditional television will continue to exist in the future, or will streaming platforms replace it completely? Why?
I don’t think traditional television will disappear completely, but it will probably become much less popular. Certain types of content, like live sports, breaking news, and national events, are still well suited to traditional broadcasting. However, for movies and TV series, streaming is simply more convenient because people can watch on their own schedule. Younger generations are already growing up with streaming as the norm, so that trend is likely to continue. Traditional TV will probably survive by focusing on live programming rather than scripted entertainment. In the long run, I think both will exist, but streaming will remain the dominant way people consume media.
