Hello, dear listeners! Welcome to the IELTS TIME Podcast! I’m Archer. Today, we’re diving into speaking part 2: Describe a movie that you enjoyed watching. You should say: what the movie is; when and where you watched it; why you enjoyed watching it; and explain what made this movie memorable or special to you. Now, let’s hear what Joseph has to say about this topic.
So, my friend Chen, who’s really into Chinese animation, was super excited about this movie called Ne Zha 2. He was like, ‘You HAVE to watch this!’ I’d never seen a Chinese animated movie in theaters before, so I thought, ‘Why not?’ We went to a cinema downtown a few weeks ago on a Saturday afternoon, and honestly, I was really impressed.
Right from the start, I was hooked. The animation was incredible, but it wasn’t just that—the whole vibe of the movie was amazing. It had action, humor, and a lot of heart. One moment I was laughing, and the next, I was completely into the fight scenes. And honestly, some parts were really emotional. I could even hear people in the theater sniffling, and I totally got why.
The story is based on Chinese folklore, which I didn’t know much about, but Chen gave me a quick explanation. It follows this character, Nezha, and his journey. The action was non-stop, and every fight scene just kept getting better. The finale? It was intense! But it wasn’t just about the action—the humor was spot-on, and there were so many funny moments. It really lived up to the hype. I’d seen people online say it had a lot of heart, and I definitely felt that while watching.
What made it so memorable was just how much I enjoyed it. It was a total emotional rollercoaster. I walked out of the theater feeling super energized and impressed. Now, I definitely want to check out more Chinese animated movies. It was just such an awesome experience
That was a great response from Joseph! He did a fantastic job describing the movie and expressing his thoughts in a natural and engaging way.
Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the key vocabulary he used.
Joseph immediately grabbed our attention by saying, ‘I was hooked.’ He used this to describe how the movie captured his attention from the very beginning. ‘Hooked’ is a great way to express being completely interested in something—whether it’s a film, a book, or even a new hobby. For example, ‘I started reading this novel last night, and I was hooked right away!’
He also talked about ‘the whole vibe of the movie.’ ‘Vibe’ is a casual way to describe the overall feeling or atmosphere of something. You might hear people say, ‘I love the vibe of this café—it’s so cozy and relaxing.’
As he described the action, he highlighted the ‘finale.’ When Joseph said, ‘The finale was intense!’ he was referring to the last part of the movie, which was dramatic and exciting. ‘Finale’ is commonly used to talk about the ending of movies, shows, or performances. For example, ‘The finale of the concert was incredible—they played their biggest hit with fireworks in the background!’
And, reflecting on the anticipation, Joseph said, ‘It really lived up to the hype.’ This means the movie met or even exceeded expectations after being talked about a lot. You can use the phrase ‘live up to the hype’ when describing anything that is as good as people said it would be. For example, ‘Everyone was raving about the new restaurant, and when I tried it, it totally lived up to the hype!’
Then, he highlighted the humor, saying ‘the humor was spot-on.’ ‘Spot-on’ means something is perfect or exactly right. You can use this to describe anything that is accurate or well done, like ‘Her advice was spot-on—it helped me a lot!’
But what truly resonated was when he described the movie as having a lot of ‘heart.’ When Joseph says the film had ‘heart,’ he means it was full of emotion, sincerity, or deep meaning. It’s a great way to describe something that touches you emotionally. For example, ‘That movie had so much heart—I could really feel the characters’ struggles and triumphs.’ It’s often used when you want to say something is emotionally powerful or meaningful.
And considering all those emotional highs and lows, he also described the movie as ‘a total emotional rollercoaster.’ This is a great way to talk about something that has a lot of emotional ups and downs. For example, ‘That book was a rollercoaster of emotions—I was laughing one minute and crying the next!’
So, we’ve explored some key vocabulary from Joseph’s experience—from being ‘hooked’ right from the start to understanding the ‘vibe’ of the movie, experiencing the ‘intense’ finale, and seeing how it ‘lived up to the hype.’ The humor was ‘spot-on,’ the movie had so much ‘heart,’ and it all culminated in an ‘emotional rollercoaster.’
These words and phrases—‘hooked,’ ‘vibe,’ ‘finale,’ ‘live up to the hype,’ ‘spot-on,’ ‘heart,’ and ‘emotional rollercoaster’—are really useful for expressing your own experiences. By using them, you can make your descriptions more vivid and engaging. So, try incorporating them into your own conversations and see how they enhance your speaking.
